Leica Summicron-M 66mm f/2.0

The Leica Summicron-M 66 f/2 is a reinterpretation of the historic Elcan 66mm f/2, a lens developed in the early 1960s by Dr. Walter Mandler at Ernst Leitz (Canada) Ltd. for a secret contract with the US Navy. At the time, only around 200 units were made, intended exclusively for discreet reconnaissance photography. Leica now brings this rare concept back as part of the Leica Classic Line, in a worldwide edition of 660 units.

The 66 millimeter focal length

The unusual 66mm focal length was not a stylistic choice at the time, but the optical solution to a specific requirement: combining maximum resolution with a fast aperture and a compact, unobtrusive design. Dr. Mandler deliberately chose 66mm because this distance best met all requirements. The Summicron-M 66 f/2 builds on that concept and bridges the classic standard and portrait focal lengths, giving you a photographic dimension you don't get with a 50mm or 90mm lens.

Recognizable rendering and sharpness right to the edge

With the 66mm focal length, you take photos with a natural look and a slight telephoto effect. At a wide aperture, your subject stands out clearly from the background, with a soft bokeh typical of portrait and reportage photography. Stop down further, and the Summicron-M 66 f/2 continues to impress with high resolution that renders even the finest details clearly. This characteristic was also crucial in the historic Elcan: negatives needed to be enlarged without loss of sharpness, which makes the lens suitable for architecture, landscape and close-up photography.

The Summicron-M 66 f/2 is fully manually operated and built from metal components, giving it sturdy, precise and long-term reliable handling. Thanks to the Leica M mount with 6-bit coding, the lens communicates automatically with your M camera for correct metadata, and via an adapter you also use it on the Leica SL. The click-stopped aperture, adjustable in half stops, gives you precise control while shooting, while the aperture ring deliberately turns in the opposite direction compared to standard M lenses, a feature that traces directly back to the original design. The compact dimensions and low weight of approximately 456 grams make the lens unobtrusive and pleasant to shoot with all day, whether you're working on the street, in a portrait studio or while traveling.
