A Nano AR coating is applied to specific elements, greatly reducing reflected light to lessen image shadows and flare for more contrast and colour accuracy in strong lighting conditions.

The bright maximum aperture of f/1.4 gives a very shallow depth of field for pleasant background blur when using selective focusing techniques. The rounded 11-blade aperture is ideal for portraits and provides deep and dreamy bokeh. The f/1.4 aperture offers control over depth of field and beautiful bokeh, while also allowing you to shoot handheld in low light.

Two XD linear motors make optimal use of the advantages of the Sony camera bodies and ensure fast, quiet and accurate autofocus and subject tracking. An AF/MF switch on the lens barrel provides tactical operation of the settings. The internal focusing design ensures better focusing performance and maintains a consistent overall lens length during use.

In addition, this Sony prime lens features an iris lock switch that prevents the aperture ring from being moved accidentally. This switch can also be unlocked so that the aperture ring can rotate seamlessly and silently. For video applications, an easy-to-read aperture ring with f-stop engraving can quickly be declicked on the lens barrel for smooth and silent aperture control. Two focus buttons are located on the body for intuitive operation and quick access to selected settings. A manual focus ring with linear response provides fine linear focusing.

Despite the large maximum aperture, the complex optical design and the presence of a powerful AF system, this lens weighs just 516 grams. The lens is therefore designed for everyday use in challenging conditions and has a dust- and moisture-resistant construction. All seams are sealed, buttons and switches have rubber gaskets and a rubber ring seals the lens mount. The fluorine coating on the front element repels water, oil, fingerprints and dirt and makes the lens easy to clean.
