    Nikon history

Thanks to its long history of innovative cameras and close relationship with numerous professional photographers worldwide, Nikon has built up an indestructible image. Certainly in digital photography, Nikon can easily be referred to as one of the main pioneers. From the very beginning, the Japanese manufacturer has played a prominent role with digital technology which made the tremendous high quality in photography and video of today accessible to everyone.

More than a hundred years of experience

The history of Nikon began with the foundation by Nippon Kogaku in 1917 which made optics in Tokyo for microscopes and later also binoculars. From 1933, Nikkor lenses in high quality for various Japanese companies - as well as Canon - were produced. After WWII, as a camera manufacturer the company played an inconspicuous role until about the 1950's when the exceptional quality of Nikkor lenses caught the attention of photo journalists in particular. Around that time, viewfinder cameras and twin lens reflexes were gradually replaced by DSLR cameras. Nikon's own cameras such as the S2 or SP were also replaced by the large F-bodies. Soon, sensational SLR cameras such as the Nikkormat and Nikon F became the ideal equipment for many photo journalists.

    Nikon 1

    Specialist in DSLR and lenses

The almost merciless sharp Nikon lenses contributed considerably to the popularity, certainly with the then trendy 'hard' black and white images. As well as journalists, fashion photographers also discovered the strength of pixelated, sometimes almost graphic images. Shifts from medium format to 35mm SLR cameras already originated then, in studios as well. During that analog era, Nikon remained for everything a specialist in DSLR, although now and again a single Nikon film camera or compact camera 'passed by'. There were even viewers and lenses for medium format cameras (Bronica) up to 8x10 inch large format supplied. Nowadays, Nikon has produced a total of more than 100 million lenses.

    Nikon D750

    Pioneer in digital cameras

Nikon was involved at the start of digital photography. On the basis of the Nikon F3HP, sensor pioneer Kodak launched its DCS 100 camera in 1990, with a 1.3 mexapixel sensor instead of film. Not long afterwards, Nikon E2 and E3 cameras arrived on the basis of Fuji bodies. 1mexapixel or more was still not impressive, but with the Nikon D1 in 1999 digital technology definitely caught on, especially for journalists. More digital cameras became available and from 1997 also compact cameras from Nikon. Partly thanks to top models from meanwhile more than hundred Coolpix compacts and DSLRs such as the D70 and D200, more and more analog cameras were discarded.

    Loyal to their customers

New developments in spite of 'loyal' users remain very important for the policy. Many of the old lenses can still be used, certainly on the lovely retro model, the Nikon Df. The 'old' 35mm FX format of bodies such as the D850 offers quality which competes with that of considerably more expensive medium format systems. With their smaller DX sensor format (APS-C), compact body and latest technology, the popularly priced DSLRs such as the D3500 and D5600 bring professional possibilities within everyone's reach.

    High-end compact and mirrorless cameras

Yet the famous Japanese company is by far no longer only that 'DSLR specialist'. With high-end compact cameras such as the Nikon A900 with a large sensor and professional mirrorless cameras such as the new Nikon Z series, Nikon remains one of the largest in the camera world. And partly thanks to an almost fifty-year long close relationship with photo journalists, fashion and studio photographers, Nikon has the knowledge to continue to improve its cameras at all levels.
